In hopes of igniting an interest in the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics fields and to aid in the furthering of STEM related research and practice the Floyd County Public Library will begin a series of STEM activities beginning Saturday April 1st.
STEM Saturdays will feature a thematic approach to teaching and engaging students. We will set in place four areas that will focus on the same theme but be specific to one STEM field. In other words, if we are talking about perpetual motion we will have a station focusing on the Science of perpetual motion, a station focusing on the Technology of perpetual motion and so on.
We are looking for teachers and even those in the field to come along side us and help with this program. If you are a teacher who loves math, or science or tech or engineering we would love to have you involved. The students will see a familiar face and your love for the field may be transferred and/or inspire the students to pursue a STEM field.
Also if you know someone in the field who is “on fire” for a STEM discipline and may be able to donate time to this endeavor we would love to have them join. We are asking for a commitment for one Saturday, for one two hour program. I know teachers don’t like to teach on Saturday but this is a unique opportunity to share your love for the fields we need to point our kids into.
The schedule for STEM Saturdays will be as follows: 11 AM – 1 PM (Flexible)
April 1st – Prestonsburg
April 15th – Minnie
April 29th – Prestonsburg
May 13th – Minnie
May 27th – Prestonsburg
June 10th – Minnie
It is my hope you will join us in this project. If it is a success, as we expect it to be, we will resume the program at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. We want to support you the educator as you coax your students to reach higher.
